Facebook Members Support Dog Shelter After Tragic Fire

Thursday afternoon a fire broke out at Manchester Dogs’ Home in Manchester, United Kingdom.

Firefighters fought the blaze as members of the local community reportedly tried to save the dogs inside.

A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester police said that the fire claimed the lives of 60 dogs who were unable to escape. It is unclear how many more are injured.

A young man in the area whose name has not been released is currently in police custody and being questioned on suspicion of arson.

Within hours of the fire breaking out a support page had gained thousands of likes on Facebook.

People learning about the tragedy began offering to help in any way they could, with many pledging to adopt dogs that survived the blaze.

Manchester Dogs’ Home is a locally well-known shelter that, along with its sister site, Cheshire Dogs’ Home, has found homes for over a million dogs since it first opened in 1893.

Over £270,000 has been raised for the dog shelter following the fire.

Initial reports said that 43 dogs had died in the fire. It is now being reported that the fire claimed 60 dogs’ lives.
