Derek Shaw was vacationing with his wife Anna in Cromer, Norfolk when they caught sight of a dog stranded in a very precarious position. The Border Collie was stuck on a narrow ledge of a cliff face.
Millie, the dog, had been missing for 21 hours when Derek and Anna spotted him. She was frightened by another dog and was separated from her owners.
It’s likely she was trapped on the cliff for most of that very cold and windy night. If she had lost her footing , Millie would have slipped and fallen 250 feet down.
Derek, a dog lover, knew he had to act to save her, “I love dogs and I just didn’t want to leave it there.”
So, with the help of his wife and a Good Samaritan, he hung over the cliff to try and reach her. Millie seemed to understand he was there to help her and she stood up just enough for Derek to grab hold of her collar and pull her up!
“Looking back it was probably a bit of a stupid thing to do, but when you are a dog lover you do not think.”
Millie’s owners, Bobby Baker and Laurel Bowes, the two had been calling vet clinics, police, and animal shelters and even radio stations to see if they could help find Millie.
When Laurel learned what Derek had done to rescue Millie, she broke down in tears. Derek refused the couple’s financial reward and Millie is back at home with her happy family.
