Military dogs and soldiers put their lives on the line every single day. Their jobs are not only hard but often thankless, even though their lives are at risk, they do everything with a smile on their face.
Many dogs have served in the military, and many of them have passed away. Treo was one such dog who worked in many tours in Afghanistan, and his job was detecting explosives. He was so good at his job that he even earned the name of “the black dog” with the Taliban.
Treo was eventually retired in 2009 and lived out the rest of his days with his family, including three children. He died at the ripe old age of 14, surrounded by those he loved, but his passing left his family heartbroken.
Dave, Treo’s owner, who served with him, decided to honor him in the best way possible. He tattooed a paw onto his arm, along with the following words that speak to the heart of any dog owner.
They read: “I will lay down my life for you and expect nothing but love in return. I protect my Dad with my life, and would gladly take a bullet in his place. I find weapons and bombs. I am the first sent in and sometimes the last to leave. I am the nose and ears of my Dad. I protect and serve him. I would die for him and for you. I only ask for compassion and a kind word.”
The tattoo artist also sprinkled Treo’s ashes onto Dave’s skin before he started tattooing. This way, Treo can be with Dave forever, even during those darkest of times.
