Conservationist Weidong Li first discovered the adorable creature called ’Ili Pika’ (Ochotona iliensis), in 1983. This is one of the rarest, most endangered species on the planet. Nearly 20 years later a distant relative of this rabbit, was spotted again in China’s Tian Shan Mountains. Sure enough, this time it was seen by none other than the very same Weidong Li.
This little Ili Pika is the first one of his species to be photographed in 20 years!
It has been nicknamed the ’magic rabbit’ because it is rarely ever seen!
Only around 1,000 or so adult Ili Pika rabbits are believed to be living in the wild today, due to loss of habitat and severely fragmented populations.
This is Weidong Li — the man who originally discovered the Ili Pika species and has been studying it for many years.
